Why these Indian companies simply ignore iPOD surfers, many CEOs and CIOs can visit their pages from these gadgets and their First Experience would not be great!

It is time she gives up her fast and marries her Goan lover and lives a meaningful life. If she continues to fast for ever she will endup as Swami Nigamananda, who died after a 114-day fast for saving Ganga.

Anti-AFSPA activists are holding her hostage and not allowing her to break the fast. The fast can now be taken-up by others with her moral support.

It is unlikely that it will go through as USA - a permanent member in Security Council - will veto any such move to placate Israel.

Stripped of his powers by publisher and group Editor-in-Chief N Ram, Managing Director and his brother N Murali has hit back saying that he will not quit. And that he would try to “make Ram see reason and retire as Editor-in-Chief as committed by him in September 2009 and ensure a smooth transition.”

Ram, incidentally, has denied that he made such a commitment.

“Some members of the Board of Directors have been trying to systematically undermine and erode my authority and responsibilities and rights and obligations,” Murali wrote in an email to “colleagues” in the company today. “I will not allow that to happen.”

Murali, as The Indian Express reported today, is said to have proposed a retirement age for members of the board — one of the hot-button issues that polarised the board.

The board is split with one faction proposing that all directors retire at 65. Ram turns 65 in May. The other faction is opposed to the proposal.

Murali was blunt in his email: “At the Board meeting on 20th March, some Directors subjected me to utter humiliation and attempted disempowerment. I will resist all attempts to deny me my rights, responsibilities and duties as the Managing Director.”

When contacted by The Indian Express, Murali said his email was in response to a circular sent by Ram to heads of departments announcing a change in his designation and his role.

“The circular was sent announcing my re-designation as senior managing director whereas I am currently the managing director. Along with this, all my powers were substantially and purportedly removed. My post has been given to another board member,” said Murali. “My responsibilities have been farmed out to some other members on the board.”

While Murali declined to name the new appointee, sources said K Balaji, the younger brother of K Venugopal, currently the joint editor of The Hindu Business Line, has been appointed as managing director in place of Murali by the faction supporting Ram.

All in all exit of N Ram from the Hindu will be as chaotic as his rise!

51 Shaktipeethas Location in India

Shaktipeeth The Shaktipeethas (places of strength) are places of worship consecrated to the Goddess 'Shakti', the Durga. They are spread throughout India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Legend

According to a legend, during Satya Yuga, King Daksha, son of Brahma performed Vrihaspati Yagna with a desire of taking revenge on Lord Shiva. Daksha was furious over his daughter, Sati’s marriage to the 'yogi' Shiva against his wishes. Daksha invited all the deities to the Yagna except for Shiva and Sati. Though Sati was not invited did not deter her from attending the Yagna. She expressed her desire to attend the Yagna to Shiva who tried to dissuade her from going. He eventually gave in to her demand and allowed her to go escorted by his ‘ganas’ (followers).On reaching her parents home, Sati wasn’t given attention and love that a daughter expects, but was rebuked and insulted for her marriage to the ‘yogi’. Sati was unable to bear her father's insults toward her husband, so she committed suicide by jumping into the pyre.

When Lord Shiva heard about her death he became furious. He went to the place where the Yagna was held and destroyed the area. Daksha’s head was severed by the Ganas and after he apologized for his act of foolishness, Shiva replaced his head with a goat’s head.

Struck by grief, Lord Shiva took Sati's body with him and started performing Tandav, dance of destruction. Other Gods requested Lord Vishnu ("The Preserver" in Hindu mythology) to stop this dance after which he severed Sati's body into 51 pieces with Sudarshan Chakra, so that Lord Shiva could return to his sanity and once again take up his duties. Various parts of Sati's body fell at different places which are known as Shaktipeethas.

At all Shaktipeethas, Goddess Shakti is accompanied by Lord Bhairava (a manifestation of Lord Shiva).

Many of us say that these things don't work in India.
Couple of months back, the Faridabad Municipal Corporation laid new roads in his area and the residents were very happy about it. But 2 weeks later, BSNL dug up the newly laid roads to install new cables which annoyed all the residents. A resident used the above listed grievance forum to highlight his concern. To his surprise, BSNL and Municipal Corporation of Faridabad were served a show cause notice and the guy received a copy of the notice in one week. Government has asked the MC and BSNL about the goof up as it's clear that both the government departments were not in sync at all.

So use this grievance forum and educate others who don't know about this facility.
This way we can at least raise our concerns instead of just talking about the 'System' in India.

I also didn't know how to find LPG cylinder's expiry date? Expired Cylinders are not safe for use and may cause accidents. In this regard please be cautious at the time of accepting any LPG cylinder from the Vendor.

Here is how we can check the expiry of LPG cylinders:
On one of three side stems of the cylinder, the expiry date is coded alpha numerically as follows A or B or C or D and some two digit number following this e.g. D06.

The alphabets stand for quarters
1. A for March (First Qtr)
2. B for June (Second Qtr)
3. C for Sept (Third Qtr)
4. D for December (Fourth Qtr).

The digits stand for the year till it is valid. Hence D06 would mean December qtr of 2006.
Please Return Back the Cylinder that you get with a Expiry Date, they are prone to Leak and other Hazardous accidents...

There are people like AR Rahman and Arif Mohammad Khan, in modern times who find it elevating to sing the soul-stirring song. Post-independent India has seen social reformers and intellectuals like MC Chagla, Hamid Delvi, etc, pleading tirelessly to their community to join the national mainstream. The liberal leadership of Indian Muslims has often found it difficult to carry the Muslim masses with it, as the more orthodox held sway over their political decision-making. This helped cynical political bargain by the self-appointed champions of minority rights like Congress and Communist parties, which keep Muslims in perpetual bondage of vote-bank politics even as this game damaged and undermined the community-economically, educationally and even socially.

The mullahs, however, found the gamble rewarding because it helped them tighten their stranglehold. Out of this bargain developed the penchant of the Muslim clergy to issue fatwas on all and sundry issues, of late, making it a matter of general ridicule. The growing criticism from within the community against the fatwa regime had in recent years made the clergy a little wary, especially on issuing fatwas on social issues. The latest one on Vande Mataram for this reason sounded more a pre-meditated publicity stunt than a matter of real concern.

Muslims were in any case not hotly debating if they should sing or chant, worship or pray on Vande Mataram. The Muslims, who joined hand in hand singing the great national song in their fight against the British, early 20th century in their desire to rescind Bengal Partition, were not less religious than the present-day mullahs.

The real problem with the mullah is his medieval attitude towards woman. He cannot digest the idea of honouring womanhood, her dignity, in the form of a goddess, mother or motherland. It seems more a pathological deformity than religious rigidity. It has more to do with treating woman as an object, a chattel than a source of inspiration, grace and creativity. This is his anathema with the concept of motherland also.

It is surprising that he is not able to salute the land that gave him birth, that continues to give him succour and sustenance. This is in other words called gratitude or patriotism. It is a non-negotiable paradigm, Vande Mataram is only a literal translation of an Indian's feelings, attitude and attachment to this land on whose abode he finds his fulfilment and meaning in life. To deny this is to deny ones own identity, ones claim to be its citizen and an equal partner to its growth and prosperity.

By issuing a fatwa barring its followers singing Vande Mataram, the mullah is chopping off his community away from its own ancestral right. Thankfully, the members of the community have better sense. These mullahs no more represent or call the shot in the community. It is time for them to realise their irrelevance or for the community to show them their place. A Muslim becomes a better Muslim when he owns and belongs to the land of his birth.

The CSHF has alleged that the wayward activities of the YS Jagan group have the blessings of Shri Veerapa Moily and Prof PJ Kurien. It demanded immediate removal of these persons from the responsibilities of Andhra Pradesh Congress party.

The Hindu religious followers in Andhra Pradesh were expressing happiness and confidence after a five-and-half-year-long period when evengalists had a field-day in Andhra Pradesh. A Hindu segment within the state unit is putting pressure on the Congress high command to confirm K Rosaiah as Chief Minister even as the Christian lobby is actively canvassing for Jagan Reddy. An unofficial ginger group in the party, Congress Secular Hindu Forum (CSHF) had rejected the idea that another Christian religious follower will once again occupy the Chief Minister's office. The Hindu followers in the Congress high command has taken a stand off, with the Congress president Smt Sonia Gandhi on this issue. A section of Hindu-minded leaders in the AICC is backing the Hindu Forum within, say sources.

The CSHF has alleged that the wayward activities of the YS Jagan group have the blessings of Shri Veerapa Moily and Prof PJ Kurien. It demanded immediate removal of these persons from the responsibilities of Andhra Pradesh Congress party. Now-a-days there is hardly any respect for the strong fundamentals of the party. The defectors with large money bags from other parties have become the backbone of the Congress Party, who captured the MLA, MP posts with their money power. They are dictating terms with the leadership. These bunch of people with the MLA, MP tag are not conscious about the party history and are least bothered about the party discipline. They are most vociferous with the YS Jagan cause. CSHF alleged that Shri Veerapa Moily and Prof PJ Kurien are providing wrong and exaggerated information about the Andhra Pradesh situation to Smt Sonia Gandhi. The party has not accepted the emergence of CSHF officially.

The CSHF demanded the re-constitution of the Andhra Pradesh State Ministry and the expulsion of certain ministers, who were not ready to cooperate with the Chief Minister. They also demanded a change in the post of Speaker, Deputy Speaker and the Chief Whip. They are demanding the removal of PCC president D Sreenivas from the post and the appointment of a senior Congress leader with more interest in the party discipline and caring about the unity of the party as PCC president.

They allege that the Christian block in the AICC leadership consisting the Congress president Smt Sonia Gandhi. Shri Rahul Gandhi, Shri Oscar Fernandes, Shri Ajit Jogi and Shri AK Antony has nurtured a hidden agenda to anoint Shri YS Jagan Mohan Reddy as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. Shri M Veerappa Moily or the Congress Party affairs in Andhra Pradesh who acted as the middleman between the AICC leadership and the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy and the AP Congress co-ordinator Prof PJ Kurien, have also made their best for the ambitious cause. The Congress Secular Hindu Forum insists that YS Rajasekhara was a staunch believer in Christianity. He had the dubious distinction of a dual personality that secretly encouraged each and every illegal activity of the Christian missionaries wearing a secular mask. There is around two per cent Christian population in this state. And the more than 90 per cent Hindu population became the victim of this British model of rule in Andhra Pradesh. The Congress Secular Hindu Forum informed the Organiser that it protested many times before the Congress high command against this anomaly. Shri Anil Kumar, the son-in-law of the late Chief Minister, has used all the government machinery at his disposal for his virulent and illegal communal and activities. There was a highly secret conclave of around 500 top-level Christian missionaries, who are actively participating in the conversion activities in Andhra Pradesh. The conclave was held in a church at Masab Tank in Hyderabad on August 24 and 25, 2009. Andhra Pradesh State Government advisor Shri Stanley Babu and the then Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy's son-in-law Shri Anil Kumar also participated in that high-profile meeting and presented statistics about the current status of the Christian population in the state. They claimed that after the five-year rule of YS Rajasekhara Reddy the Christian population in Andhra State has phenomenally increased enjoying a 16 per cent share among the general public. In reality, there is only two per cent Christian population in Andhra Pradesh. There is a well thought-out plan behind this exaggerated figure. They want to nudge this figure to bargain with the government, and with the political parties for a substantial share in power and positions. They have created an impression that the newly converted believers played a crucial role in the victory of the Congress in the general elections. Stanley Babu had assured the gathering that an all-out government patronage with material help was available to the missionaries for their insatiable hunger to convert 50 per cent of the state population to Christianity before the next general election due in 2014.

The above two persons, according to the Hindu Forum, had invented a hawkish idea to percolate among the masses, with the objective to YS Rajasekhara Reddy as an incarnation of 'Jesus Christ', who took the form of the Chief Minister to alleviate the sufferings of the poor and is destitute. To achieve their nefarious designs, they can go to any extent. They are also planning for a pernicious propaganda that Congress president Smt Sonia Gandhi and her son Shri Rahul Gandhi are staunch followers of the Roman Catholics Church, and they shall only consider the true Christian followers for the vacancies in the party and the government. This secret meeting also decided to find out a suitable property for the construction of a church in Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams and to speed up the process of conversion. Reddy had personally attended so many similar meetings which were held at Hotel Kakatheeya in Hyderabad on several occasions on the election eve.

Some of the regional Congress leaders in Andhra Pradesh informed the Congress Secular Hindu Forum central leadership about this secret meeting. CSHF leadership then met the Congress central leadership and demanded a change of guard in Andhra Pradesh Government on this basis. The Hindu religious followers in this nation will never tolerate the construction of a Christian church anywhere near in Tirumala-Tirupati. The Congress Secular Hindu Forum warned the Congress high command that they were well prepared to fight the evil designs of the Christian missionaries to convert a majority of Hindu followers, and would start a movement to liberate the Congress Party from the Christian stranglehold.

The Congress leadership was well aware that a division in the party on religious lines-Hindu and Christian-will inflict the immense damage on the leadership of Smt Sonia Gandhi and Shri Rahul Gandhi. There is 90 per cent Christian population in Nagaland. The post of Governor vacated by Shri K Sankara Narayanan, who was transferred to Jharkhand, was kept vacant for a along time, with a secret plan.

CSHF general secretary K Ravi Kumar in this connection visited the revered Sringeri Mathadhipati Vishveshwara Tirtha Swami on July 16 and informed him about the pernicious attempt by the government to appoint Smt Margaret Alwa the Uttarakhand Governor on July 18, 2009, and requested his guidance and blessing for the CSHF for its relentless fight against the anti-Hindu tirade of the Congress leadership. The Swamiji, according to Ravi Kumar, expressed his happiness and said that the Hindu followers in the Congress Party had finally found their identity and assured his full support and blessing for their struggle. Ravi Kumar also visited or more other twenty Mathadhipatis in Karnataka and paid his obeisance. After that the CSHF leaders met Shri AK Antony and presented a memorandum on July 27, which demanded the removal of Smt Margaret Alwa from the post of Uttarakhand Governor.

The high decibel demand from the Kadappa MP, Shri Jaganmohan Reddy for the chair of the Chief Minister, which fell vacant after the death of his father, has rippled the conscience of the rank and file of the Congress party. The senior leaders in the Congress party are critical about this fleeced situation and are aware that the young MP has appeared in the political arena just before the general elections, with a pocket organisation called 'Jagan Yuva Sena', which is not affiliated or related with any one of the Congress party frontal organisations. The senior Congress leaders believe the MP post bestowed to an inexperienced person like Shri YS Jagan, under the influence of his father, is already an excess.

Lucknow, May 27: Wonder herb Tulsi can not only keep the dreaded swine flu at bay but also help in fast recovery of an afflicted person, Ayurvedic practitioners claim.

"The anti-flu property of Tulsi has been discovered by medical experts across the world quite recently. Tulsi improves the body's overall defence mechanism including its ability to fight viral diseases. It was successfully used in combating Japanese Encephalitis and the same theory applies to swine flu," Dr U K Tiwari, a herbal medicine practitioner says.

Apart from acting as a preventive medicine in case of swine flu, Tulsi can help the patient recover faster.

"Tulsi can control swine flu and it should be taken in fresh form. Juice or paste of at least 20-25 medium sized leaves should be consumed twice a day on an empty stomach."

This increases the resistance of the body and, thereby, reduces the chances of inviting swine flu," believes Patel.

Hyderabad has world class airport, well-laid roads (selective amnesia on driving sense), good internet connectivity, hang-around spots blah blah ... I know some will still prefer Bangalore over Hyderabad, but Hyderabad pips Bangalore on many points. Let us accept the fact – here is a city that can be made as an IT destination of South Asia.

Last four-five years the image of the vibrant city has been marred by terrorist sleeper cells. Two out of every three terrorists caught in India have links to Hyderabad. What transformed the city to be a hot bed of terrorists?

Vicaruddin – the noted terrorist with connections to HuJI is spotted in many places in old city; in pan shops, in bakeries etc- yet the Police for some reasons couldn’t catch him. In the last two years, he and his accomplices have shot dead three-four policemen in multiple incidents in Hyderabad alone. Tata Nano passed structural safety test

The diminutive Tata Nano has passed its first basic EC structural safety
tests which will becomes Indian structural safety standard in 2012. The
tests were conducted at UK's MIRA test center under the supervision of Nic
Fasci, type approval engineer from Britain's Vehicle Certification
Authority.

Two slightly modified Tata Nano cars flown in from India to the MIRA test
center and were subjected to a 50 kmph side impact and a 56 kmph offset
frontal impact test, the minimum required for any vehicle to be sold in
Europe.

Tata Engineering chief Clive Hickman said the aim of the tests was to show
that with basic modifications the present car could meet the existing
safety regulations and set the vehicle on course for a European version to
be ready by 2012.

The tests that Tata Motors has put the Nano through at MIRA are designed
to demonstrate that the car, a low-cost vehicle aimed specifically at the
Indian market, is nevertheless within the mainstream of vehicle
development worldwide.

Tata wants to introduce a European version of the Nano by 2012 and has
plans too to export the cars to other regions, including North America. It
has also been stung by criticism that the basic vehicle does not meet
safety standards - Indian standards are less demanding than European, but
are planned to catch up.

In fact, the base Nano meets current Indian regulations and the tests at
MIRA were devised to show that small lineside modifications would mean
that the vehicle would meet present base standards in Europe, which are to
become the Indian baseline standards in 2012.

Further modification, including lengthening and widening the vehicle, plus
fitting airbags and other equipment, will be done before the car is put
through a EuroNCAP-style test for the European market.

The structural tests done at MIRA were of two kinds:

* 50 km/h side impact test.

* 56 km/h offset frontal crash test, with the car hitting a deformable
object at a 40% point on the front (driver side).

The tests are the baseline for structural safety type approval in Eutrope
at present and are due to become the baseline in India in 2012. Consumer
pressure, rather than legislative requirement, means that cars actually
sold in Europe undergo the more rigorous tests of EuroNCAP, with its stars
ratings, and Tata intends that any Nano developed for the European market
will satisfy these requirements.

The cars that went through the tests last week were modified on the line
at the Nano's temporary manufacturing base in India. Four areas within the
car were strengthened: structural foam was added to the cant rail; the
front longitudinal structure is reinforced; structure is added to the
front behind the bumper and on the firewall; and structure is added to the
front doors.

A driver's airbag was included for the tests, but this was not fully
calibrated and was triggered remotely.

Later cars developed for European markets will have features such as
airbags as standard. Other modifications will add around 150mm to the
length of the vehicle, plus some width to accommodate side airbags. There
will also be changes to interior trim and the small skinny wheels are
likely to be upgraded.

Angry over the racial attacks on Indian students, Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on Wednesday said Australian players in IPL cricket teams should be removed till such incidents continue Down Under.

"Two things should be done immediately. Captains of Australian companies who have invested in India should be summoned and told that the business atmosphere would not be conducive till the attacks stopped," Thackeray said in an editorial in party mouthpiece `Saamana'.

"Secondly, Australian players in IPL teams should be removed. Team owners like Vijay Mallya, Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta should display nationalism by doing so," the Sena chief said.

"No matter how big an Aussie player in IPL team is, he should removed and told that it is impossible to keep him in the team till the blood of innocent Indians is shed on his country's soil," Thackeray said.

He also lauded actor and friend Amitabh Bachchan for spurning an award by the University of Queensland to register his protest over the issue.

"What Amitabh did was right. He did not stop at registering his protest through mere words but conveyed to the University of Queensland that the attacks against Indians Down Under was an insult of all his countrymen," Thackeray said.

The infamous pink chaddi campaign by Delhi girls would have died down but the controversy of cultural differences over the campaign hasn't.

The attention now has turned to Mr Venkatramana Reddy- proprietor of a courier agency in Madhapur, Hyderabad for turning down the customer’s request to send the ‘pink chaddi’ parcel.

This was revealed by an ex-member of Pink Chaddi group, who opted out of the group on ‘ideological’ differences. She said the group in Hyderabad had fifty to sixty members mostly men and didn’t respect the local culture.

When we contacted Venkat he felt proud for refusing the parcel. He spoke plainly – “Sir, if Mutalik behaved like a monster, we need not respond in the same way. The response by ‘Chaddi’ is worst. Many outsiders are encouraging bar culture and like... which is alien to Andhra”. He also said that he had advised the ‘Pink Chaddi’ campaigners to send ‘Rakhi’ if they want.

India's Tata Motors launch Nano

Tata Motors launched its ultra-cheap Nano car in Mumbai on Monday — a vehicle meant to herald a revolution by making it possible for the world's poor to purchase their first car.

The name 'Nano' was chosen as it denotes high technology and small size. Most eagerly waited car
People world over were keen to see what Tata Motors' People's Car looked like, and know more about it. The Tata Motors website saw nearly 7.9 million hits on January 10 (the day the Nano was unveiled), while the Tata Nano website saw 4 million hits in 30 hours, making these sites among the busiest in the world.

The Nano website (www.tatanano.com) was developed within a short timeframe of 1.5 months and with limited resources.

The entire portal has been built on open source technologies, involving minimum investment, following the essence of the Nano - low cost, but high technology.

The Nano, which is priced starting at about 100,000 rupees ($2,050), is a stripped-down car for stripped-down times: It is 10.2 feet (3.1 meters) long, has one windshield wiper, a 623cc rear engine, and a diminutive trunk, according to the company's Web site.

The Nano will be launched on 23rd March, 2009. The car will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. Both versions will offer a wide range of body colours, and other accessories so that the car can be customised to an individual's preferences.

Stylish, comfortable

- Designed with a family in mind, the Nano has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room.

- Can comfortably seat four persons. Four doors with high seating position make ingress and egress easy.

- With a length of 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, with adequate ground clearance, it can effortlessly manoeuvre on busy roads in cities as well as in rural areas.

- Its mono-volume design, with wheels at the corners and the powertrain at the rear, enables it to uniquely combine both space and manoeuvrability, which will set a new benchmark among small cars.

Fuel-efficient engine

- The Nano has a rear-wheel drive, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft.

- The lean design strategy has helped minimise weight, which helps maximise performance per unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency.

- Performance is controlled by a specially designed electronic engine management system.

Meets all safety requirements

- The Nano's safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements. With an all sheet-metal body, it has a strong passenger compartment, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body.

- Tubeless tyres further enhance safety.

India breathes through her multiplicity, not her fragmenting voices

THERE IS a buzz about India becoming a superpower. But, are superpowers confused about national identity or inviting others to solve their civilisation's "backwardness"? Does a superpower allow foreign nexuses to co-opt its citizens as agents? India graciously hosts foreign nexuses that treat it as a collection of disparate parts. Is super - powerdom delusionary?

The Mumbai massacre painfully exposes flaws in our national character, the central one being the absence of a definitive, purpose-filled identity. Who is that "we" whose interests are represented, internally and internationally? How should Indianness be defined? Where is the Indianness that transcends narrow identities and vested interests, one that is worth sacrificing for? Is it in the popular culture of Bollywood and cricket? Or is it deeper? The national identity project is at once urgent and compelling.

The need for national identity

In their pursuit of personal goals, Indians are intensely competitive. But we lack consensus on a shared national essence and hence there is no deep psychological bond between citizen and nation. National identity is to a nation's well-being what the immune system is to the body's health. The over-stressed body succumbs to external and internal threats, and eventually death, as its immunity weakens. Similarly, a nation stressed by a vacuum of identity, or multiple conflicting identities, or outright confusion, can break up. Just as the body's immune system needs constant rejuvenation, so too a nation needs a positive collective psyche for its political cohesion.

Major nations deliberately pursue nation building through such devices as shared myths, history, heroes, religion, ideology, language and symbolism. Despite internal dissent, Americans have deep pride of heritage, and have constructed awe-inspiring monuments to their founding fathers and heroic wars. Where are Delhi's monuments honouring the wars of 1857 or 1971, Shivaji, the Vijayanagar Empire, Ashoka, or the peaceful spread of Indian civilisation across Asia for a millennium? Where are the museums that showcase India's special place in the world?

Forces that fragment

Voices of fragmentation drive India's internal politics from Raj Thackeray to M Karunanidhi to Mamata Banerjee to the Quota Raj to the agents of foreign proselytising.

While social injustice, in India and elsewhere, demands effective cures, proper treatments do not follow faulty diagnoses. Since colonial times, influential scholars have propagated that there is no such thing as Indian civilisation. India was "civilised" by successive waves of invaders. The quest for Indianness is futile since India was never a nation. The noted historian Romila Thapar concludes that India's pluralism has no essence. Like a doughnut, the center is void; only the peripheries have identity.

Such thinking infects Indian elite. Supreme Court Justice Markandey Katju, citing western historians, asserts that the Munda tribes are the only true natives and that 95 percent of Indians are immigrants; that all so-called Aryan and Dravidian classical languages are foreign, ruling out anything as pan-Indian in our antiquity; and that worthwhile Indian civilisation begins with Akbar, "the greatest ruler the world has ever seen."

This accelerating crescendo, portraying India as an inherently artificial, oppressive nation, is directed by western academics advocating western intervention to bring human rights. It is supported by private foundations, churches and the US government and promotes fragmentation by bolstering regional identities, "backward" castes, and religious minorities. Sadly, our own people, such as many activists and the westernised upper class, have internalised India's "oppression of minorities." The human catastrophe that would envelope diverse groups especially the weakest in the aftermath of India's break up is blithely ignored.

Beyond tolerance and assimilation

Critics worry that national identity promotes fascism. But while many civilisations have used identity for conquest, my vision of Indianness is driven by mutual respect. We respect the other who is different provided the other reciprocates with respect towards us, in rhetoric and in action. The religious "tolerance" of Judaism, Islam and Christianity is a patronising accommodation; it puts up with others' differences without respecting their right to be different. In contradistinction, Indian civilisation embraces differences reciprocally.

Movements that eradicate differences span the ideological spectrum. Some religions claim mandates from God to convert the religiously different. Although the European Enlightenment project dispensed with God, it enabled erasing ethnic diversity through genocide of Native Americans and slavery of African-Americans. Asians were luckier, because they could become "less different" via colonisation.

Today, many Indians erase their distinctiveness by glamorising white identity as the gold standard. Skin lighteners are literal whiteners. Media and pop culture incorporate white aesthetics, body language and attire for social status, careers and marriage. The venerable "namaste" is becoming a marker of the older generations and the servants. Pop Hindu gurus peddle the "everything is the same" mumbojumbo, ignoring even the distinctions between the dharmic and the un-dharmic. Intellectuals adopt white categories of discourse as "universal".

Difference eradicating ideologies are hegemonic. Either you (i) assimilate, (ii) oppose and suffer, or (iii) get contained and marginalised.

But Indian philosophy is built on celebrating diversity in trees, flowers, matter, human bodies, minds, languages and cultures, spiritualities and traditions and does not see it as a problem to be dealt with.

All social groups manifest an affinity for in-group relations but in the ideal Indian ethos, in-group affinity is without external aggression. Before colonial social engineering, traditional Indian castes were fluid, informal containers of identities, interwoven with one another, and not frozen hierarchically. This applied to Muslims, Christians and Hindus. Each caste had its distinct norms and was respected by others. My India is a web of thousands of castes encapsulating diverse genes and memes. This ideal is the exact opposite of fascist ethnocentrism.

Diversity yes, fragmentation no

The socially mobile castes that had preserved India's diversity were frozen into castes to serve the British divide-and rule. Independent India adopted caste identities to allocate quotas instead of safeguarding individual rights. When the Congress party failed to integrate a vast mishmash of subidentities, regional vote-banking entrepreneurs captured India's political fragments. Now, national interests are casually disregarded for fear of offending these fragments.

Cover Story Globalisation has opened the floodgates for minority leaders to tie-up with western churches and NGOs, Saudis, Chinese and just about anyone wanting to carve out a slice of the Indian elephant. Such minorities include the Nagas, now serving as a foreign subsidiary of the Texas Southern Baptist Church; Tamils who first got Dravidianised and are now being Christianised through identity engineering; Maoists in over 30 percent of India's districts; and Saudifunded Pan-Islamists expanding across India. These fragmented identities weaken Indianness due to their loyalty to foreign alliances. The leaders depend on foreign headquarters for ideological and financial support.

Such groups are no longer minorities, but are agents of dominant world majorities. They are franchisees of the global nexuses they serve. They are adversaries of the Indian identity formation. Do they truly help India's under classes? These global nexuses have a disappointing track record of solving problems in countries where they have operated for generations, including Latin America, Philippines and Africa where most natives have become converted. The imported religion has failed to bring human rights and has often exacerbated problems. Yet, Indian middlemen have mastered the art of begging foreign patronage in exchange for selling the souls of fellow Indians.

Towards an Indian identity

Hindutva is a modern political response lacking the elasticity to be the pan-Indian identity. Other popular ideas are equally shallow, such as the Indianness defined by Bollywood and cricket. Ideals like "secular democracy" and "development" do not a distinct national identity make. It is fashionable to blend pop culture with European ideologies and pass it off as Indianness. Such blends cannot bind a complex India together against fissiparous casteism and regionalism coming in the orbits of Islamist jihad and evangelical Christianity.

Indianness must override fragmented identities, no matter how large the vote bank or how powerful the foreign sponsor. Gandhi articulated a grand narrative for India. Tagore and Aurobindo saw continuity in Indian civilisation. Nehru had a national vision, which Indira Gandhi modified and defended fiercely. The Ashokan, Chola, and Maratha empires had welldefined narratives, each with an idea of India.

Debating Indianness fearlessly and fairly

A robust Indianness must become the context in which serious issues get debated. Everyone should be able to participate be it Advani or Sonia, the Imam of Jama Masjid or Hindu gurus, Thackeray or the underworld in a free and fair debate on Indianness, and no one should be exempt from criticism.

But the Indian intellectual mafia, which built careers by importing and franchising foreign doctrines, suppresses debate outside its framework, and brands honest attempts at opposing them as fascism. I offer a few examples.

A few years before 9/11, the Princeton-based Infinity Foundation proposed to a prestigious Delhi-based centre to research the Taliban and their impact on India. The centre's intellectuals pronounced the hypothesis an unrealistic conspiracy theory and unworthy of study. Even after 9/11, the American Academy of Religion refused to study the Taliban as a religious phenomenon while persisting with Hindu caste, cows, dowry, mothers-in-law, social oppression, violence and sundry intellectual staples.

Some analysts hyphenate Islamist terror with Kashmir, imputing that terrorism is a legitimate dispute resolution technique. "The plight of Muslims" is a rationalisation; and Martha Nussbaum, a University of Chicago professor, blames "Hindu fascism" as the leading cause of terrorism and justifies the Mumbai massacre by hyphenating it with Hindu "pogroms," Hindu "ethnic cleansing against Muslims," and the Hindu project to "Kill Christians and destroy their institutions." Her insensitivity to the victims, just two days after 26/11, was given a free pass by the LA Times.

Double standards are evident when cartoons lampooning Islam are condemned, whereas serious attacks against Hindu deities, symbols and texts are defended in the name of intellectual freedom. ( COMMENT: For more on this aspect, I would recommend a reading of "INVADING THE SACRED" (RUPA & CO) - Rajiv Malhotra was the 'prime -mover' in getting the book published. A fine intellectual treatise.)

Be positive and "live happily ever after"

The Bollywood grand finale, where the couple lives happily ever after, is de rigueur. Friends insist that my analysis must end with something positive by way of solving the problems I uncover. Hard evidence of dangerous cleavages in India, spinning out of control, is too "negative." The need to work backwards from a happy ending and only admit evidence that fits such endings is an Indian psychological disorder. But we don't expect doctors to reject negative diagnoses, analysts to ignore market crashes, or teachers to praise our unruly children. What if there is no "good" alternative?

It is disturbing that strategic options against Pakistan must subserve the sensitivities of Indian Muslims. This gratuitously assumes that Indian Muslims are less Indian than Muslim. Some fear that strong Indian action will precipitate increased jihad, or even nuclear war. Such fears recapitulate the early campaigns to appease Hitler. Once a violent cancer spreads outside the tumour's skin, it demands a direct attack. Vitamins, singing, and lamp-lighting are pointless. In sports or warfare, medicine or marketing, you cannot win by only using defence. The offensive option that cannot be exercised is merely a showpiece. If national interests are dominated by minority sentiments, our enemies will exploit our weakness. A paralysed India emboldens predators.

Games nations play

After Indians return to psychological normalcy, apathy will be confused as resilience. When each episode is seen in isolation there is short-term thinking, a tolerance of terrorism, and an acceptance that mere survival is adequate. Strategic planning requires connecting the trends clearly.

Indians must understand the reality of multiple geopolitical board games. Moves on one gameboard trigger consequences on others, making the tradeoffs complex. The South Asia gameboard involves USA-India-Pakistan as well as China-Pakistan stakes. Besides external games with its neighbours, India plays internal games to appease fragments, which are influenced by foreign stakeholders. Religion is used as soft power in the game of Islam versus the West, and India's fragmentation hastens the harvesting of souls in the world's largest open market. The multinational business gameboard spotlights India as a market, a supplier, a competitor, and an investment destination.

In another gameboard, scholars of South Asia construct a discourse with Indian intellectuals as their sepoys and affiliated NGOs as paid agents. Following the academic and human rights experts who profited from the Iraq invasion, the players in this game hope that US president designate Barack Obama will budget billions to "engage South Asia."

The identity challenges are offset by forces that hold India together. Private enterprises that span the entire country bring cohesion that depends on high economic growth and its trickle down to the lowest strata to outpace population growth and social unrest. Economic prosperity is also required for military spending. More than any other institution, the armed forces unify the nation because they realise that soldiers must identify themselves with the nation they are prepared to die for.

Recent US policy supports India's sovereignty, but this should be seen in the context of using India as a counterweight against Pan-Islam and China. In the long run, the US would like India not to become another unified superpower like China or to disintegrate into a Pakistan-like menace. It will "manage" India between these two extremes. An elephant cannot put itself up for adoption as someone's pet. It must learn to fend for itself.

Lessons for India

Although the US is a land of immigrants, pride of place goes to the majority religion. Political candidates for high office are seriously disadvantaged if they are not seen as good Christians. The church-state separation is not a mandate to denounce Christianity or privilege minority religions. America was built on white identity that involved the ethnic cleansing of others. To its credit, India has avoided this.Obama sought a better, unified nation and transcended the minorityism of previous Black leaders. Unlike the Dravidianists, Mayawati, and those Muslim and Christian leaders who undermine India's identity, Obama is unabashedly patriotic and a devout follower of its majority religion. America celebrates its tapestry of hyphenated identities (Indian-American, Irish-American, etc.) but "American" supersedes every sub-identity. Being un-American is a death knell for American leaders.

In sharp contrast, Mayawati, Indian Muslim leaders, Indian Christian leaders, Dravidianists and other "minority" vote bankers have consolidated power at the expense of India's unified identity. Unlike the promoters of fragmented Indian identities, Obama is closer to Mahatma Gandhi and Ambedkar, champions of the downtrodden within a unified Indian civilisation.

India can learn from American mechanisms. Indian billionaires must become major stakeholders in constructing positive discourse on the nation. They must make strategic commitments like those made by the Carnegies, Rockefellers and Fords in building American identity, its sense of history, and in projecting American ideals. American meritocracy in politics, implemented through internal primaries, is vastly superior to the cronyism in Indian politics.

The area studies programmes in American universities have close links to the government, think tanks and churches, and they examine nations and civilisations from the American perspective. India should establish a network of area studies to study neighboring countries and other regions from India's viewpoint. India should study China's establishment of 100 Confucian Studies Chairs worldwide and the civilisational grand narrative of other nations.

Ideological "camps" with pre-packaged solutions are obsolete. The Indian genius must improvise, innovate, and create a national identity worthy of its name.

Abject failure of UPA Governments foreign policy

India's autonomy in the conduct of foreign policy has been seriously undermined.

Although India should continue to have close and multi-dimensional friendship with the United States, the UPA Government ignored the fundamental truth that the US foreign policy is guided primarily by its own national interests and that India must do what is in India's national interest. The abandonment of autonomy was most evident in two issues: handling the menace of Pak-sponsored terrorism and the Indo-US nuclear deal.

The UPA Government has been derelict in its duty by neglecting India's vital internal security interests, as is evident in the manner in which it turned a blind eye to illegal immigration from Bangladesh and to the Maoist insurgency in Nepal.

The UPA Government's neighbourhood policy has been a disaster. Under its rule, our neighbourhood turned more unfriendly towards India than at any time in the past sixty years, Nepal and Sri Lanka being the most striking examples.

Under UPA's rule, India's relations with a traditional ally like Russia were downgraded, as a result of which they considerably lost their warmth and closeness. Indeed, the quality of India's relations with all the major allies has suffered due to a lack of focus and commitment.

The momentum and vigour that the Vajpayee government had introduced in India's relations with Iran and countries in Central Asia and also in its Look East Policy have disappeared.

The UPA Government failed to engage countries in Africa and Latin America, thereby impairing the strength of India's global diplomacy and also the opportunities in economic diplomacy.

The current crisis in the global economy presents major challenges and opportunities before India. The UPA Government has left India unprepared in this vital area. There is an urgent need for India to engage the international community for restructuring of the global financial institutions for stable, equitable and sustainable growth of the world economy.

On January 29, people were rather curious to see a railway train being pulled by a 'Green Engine', compartments packed with skull capped youngmen lead by bearded mullahs. Later it was revealed that this special train was going to Delhi to hold a protest rally against the law and order maintaining forces who had killed two Indian mujahideens in an encounter at Batla House in Jamia Nagar, Delhi. Perhaps to paint the engine green for this 'Ulema Express' was to show Railway Minister's sympathy with those mujahideens. From any point of view this scene was totally anti-national and pro-Pakistan. To pamper such traitorous rallies is not only a pity but a shame for the government and the Railway Ministry lead by a person who is more of a clown than a minister. What a paradox! On one side the government honours those who sacrificed their life to make the nation secure and on the other hand the same government facilitates those who are openly patronising traitors. Just see the humour, while late Police Inspector Mohan Chand Sharma sacrificed his life for the cause of the nation, a demand for an inquiry to create doubts about his bonafides is being shamelessly supported by the government. Is it not a dishonour to 'Shaurya Chakra' awarded to that police officer of repute for his integrity and dutifulness?

A correspondent of Hindi daily Amar Ujala who had boarded this train at Lucknow who was dropped at Kanpur. His narration speaks much more than published in his paper. The special passengers were well trained and disciplined. The correspondent was questioned how he managed to board this special train. But a monitor like leader saved him from further questioning ordering him to hang a travelling pass of 'Ulema Express' around his neck. The correspondent saw that cautions were given by whistle. A long whistle meant to reach one's seat as the train is going to move, two short whistles meant that there is some unknown outsider inside the train, three whistles meant stop walking to and fro from one compartment to another. A loud speaker was also being used for instructions. The correspondent was entertained by a piece of Gur (jaggery) and mineral water. A youngman named Suhel questioned the correspondent: "Look at this train, are we terrorists? We are terrorised by Israel (i.e. ATS)." Passengers were talking to one another but no one was allowed to talk to that correspondent. Even CRP personnel on duty were not allowed to board the train. Any how they managed to enter the train in under to perform their duty.

A statement of Shabana Azmi a shrewd communalist in her very marrow has warned the government that the anger of innocent Muslims can prove very dangerous, just to hide the fact that Azamgarh and the area around has become a den of ISI agents and pro-Pakistani elements.

One should ask what sort of government is this? Does it deserve to be called a government. Perhaps India is the only country where the government has forgotten to govern. It's main concern is to garner maximum number of Muslim votes and for that it can go to any limit. Has this government not become a curse for the country and the nation? The pity is that while anti-national forces especially Islamic ones are openly and boldly threatening our very existence, the nationalist and patriotic forces are awefully busy in infighting and that too without an iota of shame. May the Almighty save us from the coming dangers whose black shadows have started casting since long.

Hilarious pub-editorials and pop culture

Renuka Chowdhury has been reported to have condemned "the attack". What has she been doing all these five years to the TV channels that have been guilty of the utmost vulgarity?

This journalist who has been around in the media world for some sixty-five years must confess that he has read nothing more hilarious than some of the editorials in the English language press over the pub incident in Mangalore. It merely shows how ignorant the media is about the traumatic changes that have been taking place in Indian society in just about the last one decade and how people are striving to come to terms with them. The pub attacks has nothing to do with either the RSS or VHP or BJP or even Hinduism, no matter what our silly secularists may say. It has nothing to do with 'Hindu fundamentalism' or 'moral vigilantism' or 'assault on civil right's or 'civil liberties', as newspapers like The Hindu (January 28), The Times of India (January 28) or The Indian Express (January 28) or the People's Union for Civil Liberties have said. Even the so-called Sri Ram Sena is totally irrelevant.

To understand what has happened one has to live, as P Sainath, probably the most knowledgeable journalist of his times did, in rural India to know how the minds of villagers work, what offends them and what enthuses them. The trouble with our media stalwarts is that their minds are urban-centred. Widely travelled, they are knowledgeable about pubs in London, nightclubs in European cities and availability of various and questionable forms of entertainment in Europe and the United States. Mangalore is not Paris. It is one of the most sophisticated towns in India but is surrounded by villages which profess different culture.

Thanks to the setting-up of class universities in the districts of South Kanara and Udupi the urban centres are hosting students from over fifty countries whose presence and demands are becoming cause for concern. There is palpable tension in the surrounding villages. The villagers feel threatened. Incidentally, I am speaking with authority since I live in a place surrounded by villages which I visit regularly to address children in primary classes, students in secondary and higher elementary schools and in high schools. Parents invite me to their homes and they speak freely to me. Most of them have TV sets and a large section among them express their anger at what they have to witness, day in and day out. These are not politically motivated people or people fed with fundamentalist doctrines. One suspects that they have more respect for women then our civil rights and other organisations claim to have. The women especially hate to see urban women smoking because they feel that their own daughters might get affected by this new culture that is thrust on them. They have nothing to do with the Sri Ram Sena. And for long they have been seething with anger because they have no way to protest. Our city-based editors and their dedicated secular flock have no time to live amongst the villagers and understand their concerns. And that maddens them even more.

To say, as did CNN-IBN that what happened in Mangalore is a mater of shame to Karnataka is pure nonsense. There is nothing that either Mangalore or Karnataka has to be ashamed about. What India has to be ashamed about are our TV channels which broadcast programmes of questionable relevance. CNN-IBN will not dare to say that Maharashtra's shame is the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. If it did so the MNS goons will probably break up the CNN-IBN studios. The kind of filthy stuff which we have to witness in our TV channelsis a mater of national shame.

Of course, the Congress will try to get mileage from the Mangalore pub issue and a sycophantic press will support it. But the Congress Party obviously does not know the public mind. The BJP is doing extremely well in Karnataka and cannot easily be shaken. As The Indian Express in a moment of revelation put it, "Such incidents in an election year are fodder for political parties and some have grabbed it gladly." Renuka Chowdhury has been reported to have condemned "the attack". What has she been doing all these five years to the TV channels that have been guilty of the utmost vulgarity? One has even less respect for former Chief Minister of Karnataka, president of Janata Dal (Secular) (whatever that means) who wants the current Home Minister of Karnataka, VS Acharya to "own moral responsibility of the chaotic situation prevailing in the coastal districts and resign".

What, pray, was Kumaraswamy was doing all those years when he was the Chief Minister of Karnataka? There is no chaos in the coastal districts, as he claims. Their problem has arisen from circumstances beyond their control. Perhaps the BJP government should amend existing rules to ensure that women are barred from entering places where liquor is served, whatever the civil rights people may have to say on the subject. Rural India has yet to get accustomed to the changing cultural scene. It takes time. It takes patience.

We have come a long way from the thirties of the 20th century when the Congress was opposed to drinking and had prohibition on its agenda. What, one wonders, would Mahatma Gandhi (if people like Renuka Chowdhury know who is) have said watching girls passing drinks to customers in a pub, late at night. Perhaps Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and all those posing as defending human rights would like to say something on the subject. The arrogance of the Indian media when it itself needs to answer many questions concerning media morality and ethics is best ignored.

There are many questions one would like to ask the media, similar to the ones that The Times of India (January 28) has raised. The tragedy is that our media has no time to study the hows, whys and wherefores of an event before making judgment. News gathering is one-sided. It is easy to get some society women to condemn the violence in the Mangalore pub. "Intolerance is spreading deep and fast in our country", laments The India Express.

It speaks of a "warped sense of Indian tradition and ethos". The Express must send a team to Mangalore to talk to people from various walks of life, especially people from the surrounding villages. The Express might then learn that its own "warped" sense of righteousness needs looking into. All societies changes. But acceptance of change comes easy when it is gradual. When change occurs overnight, as it were, then it gives way to violence. In judging violence one must be wary of overstepping one's limits. By its reckless criticism, the media has lost its right to sit on judgment. It has to be made answerable to the people. For far too long has the public been silent about the multiple shortcomings of the media. It needs to be tamed.

Mahatma Gandhi would have resorted to satyagraha against pubs

If Ram Sainiks honestly believed that going of boys and girls to pubs resulted in their moral and material abandonment, which is injurious to national interest, the method of opposing it should have been in conformity with the approved moral and civilised behaviour. Their indulging in indecent and violent attack against pub-goers including women is condemnable and constitutes an offence punishable.

The recent physical and spoken assault on women going to pubs in Mangalore by those calling themselves Sri Ram Sainiks has been highly unjust and indecent and has very rightly come in for severe condemnations far and wide in the country. This is the evidence of sanctity attached to womanhood and the highest esteem in which the women are held in Bharatiya culture. As defined in Times of India (31-1-09), pub culture decoded the term stands for women drinking and socialising with men in public places, the desire behind this is obviously carnal between males and females who are not husband and wife. If Ram Sainiks honestly believed that going of boys and girls to pubs resulted in their moral and material abandonment, which is injurious to national interest, the method of opposing it should have been in conformity with the approved moral and civilised behaviour. Their indulging in indecent and violent attack against pub-goers including women is condemnable and constitutes an offence punishable. The Government of Karnataka has rightly arrested them and initiated criminal proceedings against them.

It is for this reason, Mahatma Gandhi declared that the means through which an end is to be achieved should be just and fair. It is on this principle, Mahatma Gandhi adopted the path of non-violence in the freedom struggle against unjust foreign rule. It is because he succeeded in this unique method adopted in human history, he became Mahatma and came to be respected by the whole world in view of the great faith Mahatma Gandhi had in non-violent methods. The firm belief of Mahatma Gandhi in morality and good character is evidenced by the firm stand he had taken against consumption of intoxicated liquors. In his book entitled My Picture of Free India written on the eve of achieving political independence, he unequivocally declared as follows:-

"I hold drinking spirituous liquors in India to be more criminal than the petty thefts which I see starving men and women committing and for which they are prosecuted and punished I advocate the summary punishment of those who manufacture the fiery liquid and those even who persist in drinking it notwithstanding repeated warnings. I do not hesitate forcibly to prevent my children from rushing into fire or deep waters. Rushing to red water is far more dangerous than rushing to a raging furnace or flooded stream. The latter destroys only the body, the former destroys both body and soul."

This view of Mahatma Gandhi indicates that he was very firm on preventing youths falling into the injurious habit of consumption of intoxicating liquors or drugs. By and large youths go to pubs to satisfy their sensual desires without realising that it is sure to result in moral and material abandonment and they will become unfit to bear the family or social responsibilities. Therefore, it is not correct to call it pub culture, as it is a vice and not a virtue. It is therefore clear that if Mahatma Gandhi were to be alive, he would have resorted to satyagraha in protest against youths going to pubs but in a peaceful and civilised manner as it is well known that as part of struggle for freedom, Mahatma Gandhi had directed Congressmen to boycott liquor shops and even resort to picketing liquor shops. In view of this forceful idea of Mahatma Gandhi, Article 47 was incorporated in the Constitution directing the Union and the States to make law prohibiting the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors. Moreover, Article 39(c) mandates the Union and the States to take necessary steps to protect children and youth against their moral and material abandonment. In accordance with the views of Mahatma Gandhi and the directive of Article 47, law prohibiting manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquor was enacted in Karnataka after independence. It was in force till 1957.

The Congress Party which claims to be the followers of Mahatma Gandhi repealed the law prohibiting manufacture and sale of liquors in 1957 in Karnataka. Smt. Yashodharamma Dasappa, a true Gandhian and brave woman, resigned her ministership protesting against such a step. In spite of this, loyalty to liquor proved to be more powerful than to Mahatma Gandhi and the Constitution. Liquor shops are permitted to be opened in all commercial as well as residential localities like hotels and restaurants. It is significant and surprising that large number of liquor shops are allowed on Mahatma Gandhi Road and its vicinity. Pubs belong to the same category. Developing the habit of going to pubs by youth is sure to result in their moral and material abandonment. Under the Constitution, the State has been under a duty to ensure protection against such moral and material abandonment. I am certain that if Mahatma Gandhi were to be alive, he would have launched a powerful satyagraha and picketing against pubs. If Sri Ram Sainiks honestly felt so and wanted to protest it to protect youths in national interest, they should have resorted to non-violent satyagraha and picketing. But instead of doing so, the indecent attack made on women is most condemnable and onslaught on the most cherished value of womanhood in our culture. Such a situation is the direct result of failure to implement Articles 47 and 39 of the Constitution. The wide and expanding pub activities and the importance attached to sensual desires by large number of youths indicate what Swami Vivekananda stated a century ago, which has become true. He had said:

"Shall India die? Then from the world all spirituality will be extinct, all moral perfection will be extinct, all sweet-souled sympathy for religion will be extinct, all ideality will be extinct, and in its place will reign the duality of lust and luxury as the male and female deities, with money as its priest fraud, force and competition as its ceremonies, and the human soul as its sacrifice."

The situation is alarming. Substantial number of youths are falling to bad and immoral carnal desires resulting in their moral and material abandonment, which is highly injurious to the future of our nation, because youths are inflammable material like petrol, if enlightened and regulated they constitute enormous source of energy for the nation, but if ignited, they would be disastrous like forest fire. This is a matter for serious consideration by all right-thinking persons.

To start a business a Hindu youth will get a loan at 15 to 18 per cent from banks after arranging 15 per cent margin money. But a Muslim youth has to arrange only five per cent of project cost from his private sources and will get the rest of 35 per cent of the loan from NMDFC at three per cent interest and the balance 60 per cent from commercial bank at two per cent.

To ensure Muslim students admission in the top institutions like IIMs, IITs and AIIMS the entire fees is being given by the government. To prepare them for this and other public service tests the entire coaching fee is given by the government. The students are also given a pocket money from the tax-payers' kitty.

The UPA has also announced lakhs of scholarships only for minority students. All these are denied to Hindu students.

Now, the discrimination is total, with the centre making madrasa certificate equivalent with the hard-earned CBSE certificate. Should all the Hindu students leave government and public schools and join madrasas for a simple and cost-effective qualifying certificate?

In a move that goes a long way in mainstreaming Madrasa students across the country and help clear their way to higher education, the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry is all set to grant madrasa certificates equivalence to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The unkindest cut is that the plan is to implement the disastrous move with retrospective effect. It is widely believed that the madrasas are the nurseries of terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism in India. If mainstreaming is the real concern, better schools should have been established in Muslim localities and persuaded the Muslim children to get enrolled in them. Already the government has introduced a series of incentives to get the minorities more literate and enhance their competence to compete in the higher levels. Many of these incentives are denied to children of the majority community though they are equally under privileged both educationally and economically. Perhaps it is a crime under the UPA to be born in the majority community and to be poor. The pampering of the minorities, in a manner as to discriminate citizens on religious lines against the tenets of the Constitution or affirmative social action has no legal sanction. But it has been proved to be politically rewarding for the ruling clique.

Though the centre has been distributing hundreds of crores every year to modernise the madrasas they have refused to either modernise or streamline. They have also been resisting any attempt to persuade them to adopt some portions of the modern syllabi in their curriculum. The maulavis have often issued fatwas against any attempt at modernisation in these institutions though they have no qualms in receiving huge grants from the tax-payers' money. As a result, these madrasas have become islands of superstition, fundamentalism and divisive activities misleading the children in their formative years to resist all modern and scientific outlook and integration with the rest of the society. Again if mainstreaming was a concern, the centre should have asked the madrasas either to close down or limit themselves to religious teaching making any certificates issued by these fanatic institutions invalid. But the UPA seems to have other ideas. It perhaps wants to encourage the mushrooming of madrasas across the length and breadth of the country and make them breeding grounds for social disaffection.

Already at least three universities Jamia Hamdard, Jamia Millia and Aligarh Universityhave recognised certificates from madrasas for admission to post-graduate courses. The HRD Ministry has insisted that the UGC must enforce the criteria on other universities as well. But some universities are resisting the move. Finally, the UGC has set up a committee to look into the matter. On government records there are half a million madrasas active across the country. Unofficially, it is estimated that there are at least a million madrasas and their number is increasing every year with liberal funding from Islamic countries like Saudi Arabia.

The UPA claims that its anxiety is the result of the Prime Minister's 15-point programme for minorities and that it is one of the key recommendations of Sachar Committee. Taking the Sachar cover the government is already making generous contribution to minority education. And they are highly discriminatory to Hindu students. For instance, Hindu students get education loans at a rate of 13 per cent whereas the minority students get it for just three per cent interest from National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation under Finance Ministry. To start a business a Hindu youth will get a loan at 15 to 18 per cent from banks after arranging 15 per cent margin money. But a Muslim youth has to arrange only five per cent of project cost from his private sources and will get the rest of 35 per cent of the loan from NMDFC at three per cent interest and the balance 60 per cent from commercial bank at two per cent. To ensure Muslim students admission in the top institutions like IIMs, IITs and AIIMS the entire fees is being given by the government. To prepare them for this and other public service tests the entire coaching fee is given by the government. The students are also given a pocket money from the tax-payers' kitty. The UPA has also announced lakhs of scholarships only for minority students. All these are denied to Hindu students. Now, the discrimination is total, with the centre making madrasa certificate equivalent with the hard-earned CBSE certificate. Should all the Hindu students leave government and public schools and join madrasas for a simple and cost-effective qualifying certificate? Or is the UPA determined to destroy the higher education in the country?

It may be noticed that with Sonia’s remote control at the Centre, the missionaries have been emboldened to carry on their conversion activities. Pakistan a Failed Republic?

Being part of the American intelligence, I was given the job nail Pakistan on the Mumbai attacks. Though it is obvious that any terror attack in the world has either direct or indirect link to Pakistan, the Fed wanted to have tangible evidence - “data, data, data”. I embarked a flight to Islamabad and after initial bonhomie I delved on it with Raza Gilani (RG)

Me: Dear Prime Minister, Will you permit to have a look at the National Database

RG: Database, which one?

Me: The one that contains record of all citizens

RG: (blinking his eyes) Oh Yes Sure, Sure ... we can show you ... nothing to hid; it’s Open Source ...

Me: Oh it’s open source ... Is it MySQL?

RG: (completely flummoxed) oh yeah .. its OurSQL

[I know that Gilani wouldn’t have expected these intricate technical details of databases from a Secret Service Agent like me. Neither do I know this a couple of days ago. A session with top database expert Reddy got me accustomed with these terms. Reddy also gave some hints on how to query the database. “Select * from” hmm I remember it. The Like Operator... Like ‘%asab’ should bring ‘Kasab’, ‘Qasab’ etc. Some other ‘hints’ you would come to know once my report gets declassified by Fed.]

Gilani was a good host. I had a sumptuous lunch with him, after which he introduced a Software Architect who would help me in ‘Search for Qasab’. The software architect looked like a British educated person, but spoke almost nothing and drove me to a building with lots and lots of arches. He introduced me to a ‘database expert’ and left the scene.

The database expert, Rahim, was quite comfortable by my presence and took me to a big hall where around twenty PCs were placed near the four walls on a neatly crafted wooden benches.

Me: Rahim, the wooden crafting should be costlier than your PCs

As Rahim went into a small room to fetch water, I glanced at other engineers at work. Almost all of them were young – in their early twenties, they wore a Shirt that is too lengthy for their upper half, the sleeves drooped out of their hands and their pants were terribly short. It was drooping half way between knees and toes. All of them had beards and highly-designed caps. Some were playing games and one guy with a long beard was playing some Arabic song that was so loud that the database centre looked like Mecca on a Friday Namaz.

Me: Thanks for the Water Rahim, I want to have a hands-on with your National Database. Can you get me a machine

Rahim: sure sir! You can use this machine [he took me to a machine and pressed Ctrl+Alt+Del. The green Screen Saver with a mosque paved way for a greener Desktop with some Mosque and Quran inscriptions as background]

Me: [Exasperated] Can you take me to the Manager of this Organization.

Rahim: He is in Afghanistan, at present I am in charge of this?

Me: What’s he doing in Afghanistan?

I switched off the Televison and dozed off!!

How India double checked for Kasab's Nationality

On 27th Dec 2008, a day after Mumbai attacks, India thoroughly interrogated the youngster duped into terrorism by Islamic elements of Pakistan - Ajmal Amir Iman alias Kasab. They matched with the intelligence reports that he was a Pakistani and hailed from Faridkot.

Hence Deshmukh and RGV had a closed door discussion. After this they directly went to Yerawwada jail and pressed the police to Release Kasab. The police told Kasab that they had caught him because of wrong identity and released him. Kasab walked free out of Jail. But behind the scenes Mumbai Poilce was following him closely.

Kasab first went to a house in Mumbai where he was given some food and dry fruits. Then he was dropped @ Goa by the houseowner. In Goa the intelligence agency cops in disguise of Arab Traders got him on a Vessel and sailed to Karachi. They disguised Kasab as a woman and travelled with him. Innocent Kasab was twice fooled ... once by Islamic Religious Scholars, who in the Pretext of Job opportunity sold him to LeT and now by Indian Intelligence as Arab traders. Kasab finally went to Faridkot with the 'Arab Trader', where he was not allowed inside by Pakistani intelligence officials. The 'Arab trader' bribed Pak intellgence officers to meet Kasab's parents. After a short stay there, the 'Arab trader' took Kasab back to 'safe destination'
